📏 Finished Size
When made using 4-ply yarn, your finished Gertie measures approximately:
8 inches (20 cm) from nose to bottom
4 inches (9 cm) high
This makes Gertie approximately life-size for a guinea pig, creating a wonderfully realistic little crochet companion.
The finished size will vary depending on your yarn weight, hook size and crochet tension.
For a larger and cuddlier Gertie, simply use Double Knit (DK), Aran or Chunky yarn with an appropriately sized crochet hook.

The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology and can easily be converted to UK terms if preferred.
🧶 Materials
For Gertie shown, I used Scheepjes Catona 4-ply yarn:
Approximately 50 g Ginger Gold (383)
20 g Snow White (106)
4 g Caramel (506)
You'll also need:
2 mm crochet hook
12 mm safety eyes
Toy stuffing (Polyfill)
Long upholstery needle
Darning needle
Dressmaker's pins
Stitch markers
Scissors
You can use almost any 4-ply, sport weight, DK or similar yarn. Mercerised cotton is particularly suitable because it provides excellent stitch definition and helps reduce the visibility of stuffing between the stitches.
You can also have lots of fun choosing your colours. Follow the shades used for Gertie, create your own combination, or choose colours and markings inspired by a favourite guinea pig.
A complete materials list is included in the pattern.
